Oceanside is a thriving community that provides all the conveniences of a modern city without the disadvantages. Founded in 1769 by Father Juan Crespi in the area known today as the San Luis Rey Valley. His glowing report of the area was responsible for founding the Mission of San Luis Rey de Francia. The mission prospered beyond his dreams and came to be known as "King of Missions".
A small town grew up around the mission. Going to the "ocean side" was a popular weekend retreat. The two words were eventually merger to "Oceanside". When the town petitioned for a post office the name Oceanside was submitted, putting this community on the map. World War II saw Oceanside grow from a sleep little town to a modern city. With the construction of the nation's largest Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, on her border, the demand for housing and municipal services exceed supply.
Oceanside located just 35 miles north of San Diego city and 83 miles south of Los Angeles, offers a unique combination of outstanding location, temperate climate, green business community, and serene neighborhoods. The city prides itself in its beautiful beaches, surf and pier which are ideal for fishing and dining. With over 3.5 miles of sandy beaches Oceanside is the ideal place for sunning and surfing. You can take a leisurely stroll along the water or bring your pole for surf fishing. The harbor is unlike most ports all boats are visible from a two land asphalt drive encircling its shoreline.
Oceanside has 27 parks, four community recreation centers, swimming pools, senior centers and recreational opportunities geared to fit every lifestyle. Golfing at the municipal golf course or a number of other daily fee courses. Walking trails from inland to the beach and horse back riding. Nearby are amusement parks such as Sea World and Legoland, the San Diego wild animal park. Oceanside is also home to the California Surf Museum, the Museum of Art and the Mission at San Luis Rey.
Oceanside currently enjoys a diverse economy portfolio and has a number of business advantages. To encourage new investment in the City, an incentive plan for new commercial, industrial and office construction is available and the property tax is one of the lowest in the county. Oceanside has a large sporting and recreational goods manufacturing sector as well as a large number of biotech companies. The warm climate of Oceanside makes it ideal for agriculture produces, such as tomatoes, avocados, citrus fruit, nursery stock and flowers.
