Known as "The Village by the Sea," Carlsbad has the charm of a European village. Its many antique stores and boutiques, sidewalk cafes and romantic hotels are just a short walk from the beach. After browsing in delightful little shops and relaxing over lunch at a sidewalk cafe, you will succumb to Carlsbad's charms. More than four miles of spacious coastline in Carlsbad offer clean, uncrowned beaches for swimming, fishing, windsurfing, and sunbathing. The beautiful lagoons are ideal for fishing, bird watching and nature walks.

Carlsbad, along the beach bluffs near the Village is a seawall - walkway that is popular with joggers and strollers. On a clear day, the view from the seawall extends south to La Jolla and north past the Oceanside pier to the sweeping bluffs and mountains of  Camp Pendleton. One can stroll along the picturesque streets, browse intriguing boutiques, dine in delightful restaurants, or explore Carlsbad's historical landmarks. Whatever your pleasure, you will find a leisurely, unhurried atmosphere with virtually everything within walking distance.  Carlsbad's temperate climate adds to the community's charm. Temperatures average 58 degrees in January and 73 degrees in July with an average rainfall of about 10 inches.

Although the "village" dates back more than 100 years, the City was incorporated July 16, 1952.  At that time, Carlsbad had a population of approximately 7,000 people and covered 7.5 square miles. Since its incorporation, the City has grown substantially in population and size (through annexations). As of January 1, 1998, the population of Carlsbad was 73, 688 and the City encompasses approximately 42 square miles. There will be no foreseeable growth in the land size of Carlsbad because all County islands have been annexed. At build out, sometime beyond the year 2010, there will be at most 54,599 residential units in Carlsbad, housing approximately 135,000 residents.

Carlsbad schools are another reason for relocating families to consider this area.  Carlsbad unified school district performance rank is one of the best in the state.   University and communities colleges are close by and private schools available for all grades.   The Army and Navy academy, a structured college-preparatory school, has students from all across the county.

Industries in the area include a major regional shopping center, 16 auto dealers, 25 hotels offering 2,200 rooms for tourist lodging, high technology, multimedia and biomedical businesses, electronics, golf apparel and equipment manufacturers, several business and light industry parks, and numerous land developers building single and multi-family housing in a variety of community settings. Carlsbad residents enjoy the benefits of a full service City.  The City of Carlsbad is a general law city. This means the City follows the general laws of the State of California rather than having a specific charter of its own. It is a municipal corporation following the Council-Manager form of government.

Among Carlsbad attractions are the Flower Fields, which began many years go with a gardener's love of ranunculus, a buttercup like flower, has blossomed into fifty acres of brilliant colors that mesmerize onlookers every year. During the peak seasons of March and April, the colorful display is clearly visible from many Carlsbad advantage points, adding to the charm of this beautiful coastal city.

Legoland, an adventurous conglomeration of more than fifty rides, attractions, and shows, offers hours of fun with the children, grandchildren, and the young at heart. Keeping fit is a breeze with an aerobic run on the Carlsbad Seawall or a hiking jaunt along the Carlsbad trail system.

History buffs can get a thrill at the Magee Park viewing agricultural artifacts, historical gardens, and historical buildings. The Magee House, dating back to early settlers, houses the museum of the Carlsbad Historical Society. If you prefer, you can dance your way back in time as you explore the Museum of Making Music and its displays of instruments, musical excerpts, and innovative exhibits.

For those interested in the arts, the attraction to Carlsbad may be in the parades, fairs, and festivals that happen year round.  The Fiesta Del Barrio and Carlsbad Village Street Fairs are just two celebrations that everyone looks forward to.  In the summer, many people anticipate the free concerts in the parks and enticing Jazz concerts that draw crowds year after year.
